Vacation is a time to take a fun adventure, a day away from the resort on a fun excursion especially when in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.  History is everywhere in Cancun and Riviera Maya. While you may normally find history boring, (hello high school history classes!), I have discovered that history seems to come to life in this part of the world. I don’t know if it is because the history is directly in front of you or if it is because of all the adventures you can take as you are learning more about the history. I am going to choose the latter, because vacations are definitely all about the experiences and the adventures we have!

My Top Excursions for Those Seeking Adventure and History in Cancun and Riviera Maya

Chichen Itza – A great History Excursion

Chichen Itza is an archaeological site that was deemed one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. These gorgeous Mayan Ruins bring history to life. There are twenty ruins in Chichen Itza. Your first stop will be the Chichen Itza Pyramid, which is called El Castillo. This structure was built to honor the God Kukulcan. Other incredible sights to see when you are visiting Chichen Itza include the Mayan Ball Game, El Caracol, and The Temple of the Warriors.  This excursion has so much history.

Tulum

Tulum used to be a walled city during pre-Columbian Mayan times. You will find the ruins to this city along tall cliffs that are near the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. These are some of the only ruins located by water in the world. While you can spend the entire day exploring these ruins, there are three structures you must pay close attention to. Those sites are El Castillo, Temple of the Frescoes, and Temple of the Descending God.  History and adventure is in this excursion.

Xcaret – Adventure excursions for all

Xcaret is a water park in Cancun and Riviera Maya. You may be shocked to think that you can experience history inside a water park, but you actually can when you visit Xcaret! This water park has more than fifty natural and cultural attractions. Your time at Xcaret will be spent swimming along the underground rivers, taking a boat ride down Paradise River, and exploring the caves to the Mayan Village. The scenic tower will give you stunning views of the entire area, while allowing you to see what you may have missed from the ground. You will definitely want to stop at the Vino de Mexico Xcaret, which is a wine cellar that serves some of the best Mexican wines.  This excursion has natural adventure for everyone when visiting Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Xel-ha

There is actually more than one water park in Cancun and Riviera Maya! The second one is Xel-Ha, and it is filled with natural wonders you won’t be able to resist. When you are not wandering along the trails through the jungle, you might be at the top of the scenic lighthouse or in the middle of the mangrove. Xel-Ha is actually an all-inclusive park, so you won’t blow your budget on food, drinks, and activities during your visit. This means you can enjoy the river tour and Xel-Ha cave, as well as go snorkeling, ziplining, and conquer the Cliffs of Courage all in one day!  Nature’s version of the adventure park.

Xplor Park

Xplor Park is an adventure park that combines fun with the history of the area. This park has taken the historic underground rivers and cenotes and turned them into a fun place to play and explore. Most of the time, you won’t even be aware you are learning about history when you are enjoying the attractions at this park. When you are not ziplining over this park, you may find yourself exploring the underground rivers or driving a vehicle through the jungle. There is no limit to what you can see and do at this adventurous destination in Cancun and Riviera Maya.
