Have you ever been to a Christmas market? They are all the rage over in Europe. And in recent years, Christmas markets have been popping up throughout the US. They are the perfect destination for finding a little holiday cheer. Each Christmas market has food, drinks, and tons of holiday decorations. Add in the sparkling lights, visits with Santa, and other unique attractions and you can have a fun-filled day with family and friends. If you are looking for the best Christmas markets, you’ve come to the right place. I have discovered that the Christmas markets in Germany are some of the best in the world.
The Nuremberg Christkindlemarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the entire world. The very first one was held back in the middle of the 16th century. Handmade Christmas decorations fill the wooden booths. You will find items like wooden nutcrackers, Rauschgold angels, and nativity scenes.
Of course, some of those wooden booths are also packed with homemade sweets. You can’t go wrong by purchasing some gingerbread or the Nuremberg bratwurst. The mulled wine is also delicious.
A few of the special features of this Christmas market in Germany include the Children’s Christmas Market, Sternenhaus Children’s Theater, the Sister Cities’ Market, and the Lantern Parade. At the Children’s Christmas Market, younger kids can paint glass, bake cookies, or write their list for Santa. There is also a carousel and Ferris wheel for people of all ages.
The Bamberg Christmas Market is normally held within Maximiliansplatz, which is only a few minutes from the Old Town Hall. The Christmas market is a pedestrian-only area. The entire square is filled with stalls, as well as a nativity scene.
When you are not shopping for Christmas decorations and gifts, you may find yourself eating. The bratwurst, gingerbread, and roasted nuts are all must-try items at German Christmas markets.
There is more than one Christmas market in Bamberg. One of the other popular markets is the Don Bosco Christmas Market. You will find that market in Jakobsplatz, which is on Jakobsberg Hill.
The Würzburg Christmas Market brings thousands of visitors to the city each year. When you arrive at this Christmas market in Germany, you will be impressed by its size. There are more than one hundred wooden stalls filled with decorations, toys, pottery, and more.
You must eat in between your shopping adventures. I recommend starting with the Franconian Christmas cookies or gingerbread. Then washing it all down with a little traditional mulled wine.
The Römerberg Market in Frankfurt is another one of the older Christmas markets in Germany. The wooden stalls are set up within all the different old town squares. Handmade crafts and trinkets are all for sale.
Your favorite part of this Christmas market in Germany though will be the Bethmännchen marzipan cookies and hot apple wine.
You can drive to all the different Christmas markets in Germany. However, my favorite way to see a few of them are by river cruise. During this adventure, you simply board the ship. The ship then takes you from port to port. At each port, you can venture out to explore the Christmas markets in that area.
There’s no driving. No switching hotels. And no worrying about how you will manage to check off everything on your itinerary. As a travel advisor, I can easily book a river cruise for you. During this cruise, you can see all the best Christmas markets to visit in Germany.
