Do you love to wander around historical sites while learning about the people who lived there in the past? If you said yes, you would love to spend time at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens! This plantation happens to be the oldest public attraction in Lowcountry, as well as the oldest public garden in the US. A vacation in South Carolina must include a visit to the Magnolia Gardens and Plantation. While the Magnolia Plantation has been around since 1676, the Magnolia Gardens were only opened to the public in 1870.
There is so much to see and do at the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Therefore, you will want to plan an entire day for your visit. This will ensure you will see everything before tearing yourself away to continue on with your South Carolina vacation.
There are some sections of the Magnolia Garden that are more than three hundred years old. However, you won’t be able to tell the difference since the flowers are all picture-perfect. These gardens have been carefully tended to for over three centuries. Numerous generations have worked on these gardens, adding their own personal touch along the way. The best time to visit Magnolia Gardens is during the spring because everything is blooming. But honestly, you will enjoy the gardens at any time of the year.
The Drayton family lived within the walls of this house for three centuries. A tour of the house will have you walking through the same halls as they did. There are ten rooms that can be seen by the public. They are all furnished with heirlooms from the Drayton family.
One of the best ways to see the grounds of the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is by taking the Nature Tram Tour. This tour lasts for forty-five minutes. Your guide will share the history of the land while pointing out things of significance along the way. You must keep your eyes open, so you catch the alligators in the water, the birds catching the fish, and the history that emits from all the historical buildings.
Not too many people have seen a rice field up close before. When you are on vacation in South Carolina, you must take this rice field boat tour! At the Magnolia Plantation, there is an old, flooded rice field. It is located near the Ashley River. You can hear all about how rice was grown while watching the alligators going in and out of the water.
