Carnival in Curacao is a celebration filled with vibrant colors, lively people, traditional music, and delicious local cuisine. You will see elaborate costumes, as well as intricately decorated floats during this time.
This Carnival is the largest one in the Caribbean. It is also the one that has been taking place the longest on any of the islands.
The dates of Curacao’s Carnival Season change from year to year. It begins right after the New Year and ends the day before Ash Wednesday. While there are celebrations this entire time, the largest celebrations are held on the weekend before Ash Wednesday, as well as the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
Two of the main events during Carnival in Curacao are the Gran Marcha and the Marcha di Despedida. These are both parades.
Gran Marcha takes place on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Costumed dancers and other performers participate in this parade.
The Marcha di Despedida is just as big of a parade. However, this one is the final parade of the Carnival Season. It is held in the evening on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
These parades begin in the neighborhood of St. Maria and end in Otrobanda. The parade routes will be crowded, and parking can be tricky. However, I can help find the best way for you to get to the parade route during your vacation.
There are so many other events held during the Carnival Season on this island. A few of those events are:
You will never have a difficult time finding something to eat or drink when you are out celebrating Carnival in Curacao. Since all the activities are outside, you will want to make sure you take a hat and sunglasses with you. Sunscreen is also helpful to prevent sunburn.
I also recommend wearing sneakers or comfortable shoes. You will be doing a lot of walking.
This is what you should know about Curacao Carnival Season if you want to attend during a future vacation. You have plenty of time to enjoy the celebrations during this time of the year. However, if you want to attend specific events during Carnival, you will need to plan your visit accordingly. Keep in mind, it will be busiest the weekend before Ash Wednesday. That is when the main events take place. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you updated with everything, as I am planning your Carnival vacation in Curacao.
