Jetting off to faraway destinations, or taking a romantic cruise, wasn’t something you could do when your kids were small. Now that they are older, maybe even out of the house, you can go on an adventure or two with your spouse. Visiting the Norwegian fjords is one of the most romantic things to do. Especially if you choose to take a romantic cruise in the Norwegian fjords. Talk about an excellent way to rekindle the romance and learn why you fell in love with your partner all over again.
The Norwegian fjords are just like any other fjords in the world. These unique landscapes were created from massive glaciers. The glaciers melted below sea level and made the U-shaped valleys.
It took a long time for the Norwegian Fjords to be created in this way. Two and a half million years to be precise.
Visiting the Norwegian Fjords will allow you to experience the changing weather conditions that are created by the valleys. Make sure you have your camera with you when you arrive at one of these fjords. You won’t want to miss out on capturing the beauty that will be all around you!
There are more than one thousand Norwegian Fjords. That’s a lot. You definitely can’t see them all during a romantic cruise.
However, most romantic cruises in the Norwegian Fjords stop at many of the popular ones. There are nine famous fjords in Norway. You may not check them all off your list during your romantic vacation. But you should get to see quite a few.
The best fjords to see in Norway include:
During your romantic cruise, you may find yourself visiting The Lysefjord. This is the southernmost of all the famous fjords in Norway. You will have a few activities to choose from during your time near this fjord.
A day cruise on the fjord is the most popular option. However, if you want a little action in your day, consider taking a hike. Kjerag and Preikestolen are two viewing areas that are worth the hike to the top.
If those two options are not what you desire during this romantic adventure, don’t worry. The town of Flørli is where you will find the longest wooden staircase in the world. There are four thousand steps. Walking up them all is definitely an option if you want to get your cardio in for the day.
This Norwegian fjord is actually a world heritage area according to UNESCO. Steep mountains loom high in the air on either side of this fjord.
The best way to experience this fjord is by taking a daytime cruise on the water. Although, you should get off your cruise ship and check things out if you do stop in port.
The Hjørunfjord is a beautiful Norwegian fjord. Yet, it seems to draw fewer tourists than many of the others. This is excellent news for you if you want a quiet, romantic day without interruptions.
A calm day can be experienced when visiting the charming villages of Urke, Øye, and Sӕbø. More action can be found on the hiking trails. The most intense trails to conquer include Saksa, Urkegga, and Skåla. Don’t worry, there is a sauna nearby for those post-hike aches and pains.
The Hardengerfjord is the second longest fjord in the country of Norway. It is best to visit this fjord in the spring. That is when the apple tree blossoms appear. Romantic picnics are perfect under these trees.
This region is also known for its fruit juice production and delicious cider. Enjoy a few sips after a walk to the Vøringsfossen waterfall or a hike on the Trolltunga trail.
The Sognefjord is considered the king of all the fjords in Norway. It is the longest one, as well as one of the widest. There are plenty of villages to explore near this Norwegian fjord.
Other popular activities in this area include kayaking and hiking. Although, you may prefer to explore the Viking villages or check out the glaciers.
Book lovers will enjoy visiting the book town of Fjӕrland.
A ride on the gondola is one of the best ways to see panoramic views of this Norwegian fjord. Although, if you happen to visit during the winter months, skiing down Kirketaket is the way to go. You get to decide how your romantic vacation looks!
The Aurlandsfjord is attached to the Sognefjord. If you do an excursion to this Norwegian fjord, you will need to take the train to get there. Well, at least if it is not a fjord listed within the itinerary of your ship. If it is part of the itinerary, you will unfortunately miss out on one of the best train rides in the world.
It is an amazing day trip that can include a day cruise along the fjord. Although, you may prefer to go hiking, paddling, or biking in the area.
The longest zipline in Europe is located here as well. Go for a ride and get your heart racing!
Numerous waterfalls are located within the Geirangerfjord area. This stunning fjord is also on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
A visit to this area of Norway should always include a trip to three popular waterfalls. Those waterfalls include The Seven Sisters, The Suitor, and The Bridal Veil. In Dutch the names would be De syv søstrene, Friaren, and Brudesløret.
Take a picnic lunch with you to enjoy while sitting next to one of the waterfalls.
Time on the cruise ship while in this fjord will be what you appreciate the most. The Trollfjord may look familiar to you. If it does, it is because the movie, Downsizing, was filmed there. Keep an eye out for eagles. They love to fly high above this Norwegian fjord.
Visiting these Norwegian fjords are only some of the things you can do during a romantic cruise in Norway. There are many other options to choose from for a romantic cruise in the Norwegian fjords. We can discuss all those options and decide what is best for your romantic vacation.
