The Big Island of Hawaii is usually near the top of the travel bucket list when people are searching for romantic vacation destinations. This Hawaiian Island seems to have it all. Eight different climates. Massive cliffs and stunning volcanoes. Soft sandy beaches and sparkling warm water. Plus, the ability to step back from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with the person you love. There isn’t anything you won’t love about the Big Island of Hawaii. And that is why you should move it to the top of your list when planning your next romantic vacation.
Your mornings can be spent waking up, heading out to your balcony or patio, and watching the waves roll in from the ocean. At least, you can if you allow me to book accommodations with an ocean view. You might even be able to take a long stroll along the beach without venturing too far from your room if we plan it right! Imagine walking hand in hand with your partner, as you forget about the stress you left behind.
Days don’t need to be super busy during your romantic vacation in Hawaii. You can easily spend your day at the pool or the beach.
If you want something other than regular sand, head to one of the colored sandy beaches. Papakolea Beach is full of green sand. And the best black sand beach on the Big Island is Punalu’u.
You may even choose to spend the day at the spa right at your hotel. It doesn’t get any more romantic than that!
Now, if you want to head out to explore, you can sightsee in Historic Kailua Village. This wonderful seaside town can be found on the Kona Coast. You will find numerous shops and restaurants in this village.
History is everywhere in this area too. Take the time to check out Moku’aikaua Church, Hulihe’e Palace, and the Ahu’ena Heiau.
Stay late and capture the setting sun from the Kailua Pier. You won’t regret it!
Scenic drives can be really romantic. Especially when they take you to waterfalls, lush gardens, and small towns. This scenic drive will take you along the Hamakua Coast.
Begin by taking the Onomea Scenic Drive detour to check out moss-laden bridges. Stop at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden before hopping back in the car to head to Akaka Falls State Park. Don’t forget Kahuna Falls after viewing Akaka Falls.
Next up is the World Botanical Gardens and views of Mauna Kea. Picnic lunches are best at the Laupahoehoe Point lookout. Down below is a rocky shoreline and tide pools. You can take a hike through the Kalopa State Recreation Area or skip it and head to the town of Honoka’a.
Last on your list should be a stop at the Waipio Valley Lookout. Look closely to see the beautiful landscape, rushing waterfalls, and the black sand beach in the distance.
There is nothing wrong with staying on the beaten path while on a romantic vacation on the Big Island. If that is what you want to do, then Downtown Hilo should be at the top of your list. The storefronts are on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside each one, you will discover shops, restaurants, galleries, and cultural sites.
I recommend starting your day over on Kamehameha Avenue. There are plenty of shops there. Plus, you get amazing views of Hilo Bay!
Duck into the Palace Theatre or the East Hawaii Cultural Center. You may even find the Pacific Tsunami Museum or Makupapapa Discovery Center interesting.
Romantic vacations on the Big Island of Hawaii can be filled with whatever excites you the most. I can help you plan a vacation that will reignite that spark and get the love flowing between you and your partner once again.
