Is Southwest Still a Budget-Friendly Airline? A Travel Advisor’s Honest Take

For decades, Southwest Airlines built its brand around simplicity, transparency, and affordability. No change fees, two free checked bags, open seating—it was the go-to airline for budget-conscious travelers who wanted flexibility without the nickel-and-diming of traditional carriers.

But with recent fare changes, baggage fees, and Rapid Rewards updates taking effect in 2025, travelers are asking: Is Southwest still a budget-friendly airline, or is it becoming just another airline?

As a travel advisor, I’m diving deep into these changes to help you understand what they mean for your wallet—and whether Southwest is still the best choice for your next trip.

🔍 What’s Changing with Southwest Airlines?

Southwest recently announced several major changes to its fare structure, loyalty program, and baggage policies:

New Fare Types – Southwest is introducing a Basic Fare (like other airlines’ Basic Economy), which comes with restrictions.
Checked Baggage Fees – Southwest’s famous "Bags Fly Free" policy is ending for most travelers.
Changes to Rapid Rewards – Point-earning rates are shifting, and flight credits will have expiration dates for the first time.
New Fees & Restrictions – Flight changes, refunds, and points usage will be subject to more rules than before.

These updates mean Southwest is no longer the ultra-flexible, all-inclusive budget airline it once was. But does that mean it’s no longer a good deal? Let’s break it down.

Southwest’s New Pricing & Baggage Fees: Are You Really Saving Money?

💰 Southwest’s Pricing: Are You Getting Less for Your Money?

Southwest still advertises low fares, but let’s compare what you’re actually getting now:

1. The End of “Bags Fly Free” – A Major Cost Increase

For years, Southwest set itself apart by allowing two free checked bags per passenger. But starting May 28, 2025, that policy changes:

  • Business Select & A-List Preferred: Still get two free checked bags.
  • A-List & Select Travelers: One free checked bag.
  • Everyone Else: Pay per bag (pricing not yet announced, but likely in line with industry rates of $30–$40 per bag).

💡 What This Means for You:
If you usually checked a bag, Southwest flights could suddenly be $60–$80 more expensive per round trip. That wipes out the savings of choosing Southwest over competitors.

    2. The Introduction of “Basic Fares” – Less Flexibility for the Cheapest Option

Southwest is launching a Basic Fare, which will be:
  • Non-refundable
  • No changes allowed after 24 hours
  • Likely to board last (though this isn’t confirmed yet)

💡 What This Means for You:
If you book the lowest fare, you lose the flexibility Southwest was once known for. If your plans change, you might be out of luck—or forced to pay more to rebook.

3. The Changing Value of Rapid Rewards Points

Southwest’s loyalty program is getting an overhaul:

  • Points will earn at a different rate, favoring higher spenders.
  • Flight credits will expire for the first time, meaning you can’t hold onto them indefinitely.
  • Cash + Points bookings are being introduced, making redemption easier but potentially reducing point value.

💡 What This Means for You:
Frequent flyers who spend more will benefit. But for the average budget traveler, points may not stretch as far as they used to.

Let’s compare Southwest to its main competitors (Delta, United, and American) based on the new rules:

The verdict? Southwest is still a good option in some cases (especially if you have status), but for budget travelers, the cost gap between Southwest and legacy airlines is shrinking.

💡 How to Still Get the Best Value with Southwest

Despite these changes, there are still ways to maximize your savings when flying Southwest:

1️ Book Early to Lock in Lower Fares – Southwest fares tend to increase closer to departure. Booking 2–3 months in advance can help you score better deals.
2️ Consider Upgrading to Wanna Go Plus or Business Select –
If you check bags and need flexibility, paying a bit more upfront could save money in fees later.
3 Pack Smart to Avoid Baggage Fees –
If you can travel with just a carry-on, you can still keep your costs low.
4️ Use a Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card –
Some cards include free checked bags and can help offset the cost of flights.
5️ Work with a Travel Advisor – A travel advisor (like me!) can help you compare fares, find the best deals, and navigate these changes to make sure you’re getting the most value for your trip.  “Whether it’s Southwest Airlines, or Delta, United, American, or others, I always tell my clients to look at everything that is involved with your complete fare, not just the base price.  When you add in the following, seat fees, bag fees, and more the total can be higher than you realize.  I always try to find my clients the best value for their vacation dollar.”, Tina Moczynski – Travel Specialist, Shores And More Travel.
