What Is The Key Program, Really? 

The Key is Royal Caribbean’s VIP-style program that offers non-suite guests a taste of suite-level perks. It’s an optional upgrade (paid per person, per day) and includes: 

• Priority boarding and early access to the ship
• Welcome lunch with menu items from Chops Grille
• Carry-on bag drop-off and delivery to your stateroom
• VOOM Surf & Stream internet for one device per person
• Reserved seating at shows
• Priority access to select activities
• Private disembarkation breakfast and priority departure
• Luggage delivered to a dedicated pick-up area 

It sounds great, right? But let’s talk about when it actually delivers value—and when it might not. 

Crucial Questions to Ask Before You Upgrade 

1. Do you value your time and energy on embarkation day? 

With The Key, we boarded at 10:30 AM, breezed past crowds, and had our carry-ons taken care of while we sat down for a quiet steak lunch. This alone gave us almost a full extra day on the ship before others were even settled in. 2. Are you planning to purchase WiFi anyway? 

The included VOOM Surf & Stream WiFi (normally sold separately) made this upgrade a smart financial move for us—we both needed to stay connected for work and family. If you’d already be buying WiFi, The Key's cost may quickly pay for itself. 

3. Do you enjoy priority seating and avoiding crowds? 

One of my favorite moments was walking into the AquaTheater water show just before curtain—and still landing prime seats. No 45-minute wait. No rush. Just smooth sailing. If you're a fan of shows and specialty experiences, this perk alone can enhance your trip significantly. 

4. Do you need (or want) to skip the line? 

From exclusive activity access (like FlowRider or rock climbing) to easy disembarkation at ports and final day, The Key gave us options to move at our own pace. While we didn’t use priority disembarkation every time, it was there when we needed it. 

5. Are you cruising during peak season or on a mega-ship? 

The bigger the ship and the busier the sailing, the more you’ll feel the crowd—and the more you’ll appreciate having The Key. On Wonder of the Seas, one of the largest ships afloat, the program made a huge difference. On a smaller ship or off-season itinerary? It might be less essential. 

So… Was It Worth It? 

For us—absolutely. It elevated a 4-day cruise into what felt like a 5-day luxury escape. Between the early access, quiet meals, faster boarding, and priority seating, The Key helped us unlock more peace, more time, and less hassle. 

But here’s the thing: not every traveler values the same experiences. For some, the joy is in spontaneity or unplugging. For others (like us), time is the real luxury—and The Key gave us more of it.
