Packing Smarter for Your Celebrity Cruise: What to Bring Based on Where You're Going

Guide 3 of 3
Helping you make smarter travel decisions with confidence.
You've chosen your Celebrity cruise. You've found the cabin that fits the way you like to travel. Now comes the part that can turn even an experienced traveler into an overpacker:
What do I bring?
Here's something I tell travelers that sounds simple but makes a big difference:
Don't pack for a cruise. Pack for your cruise.
A suitcase for Alaska shouldn't look like a suitcase for the Caribbean. And what you need for a Mediterranean itinerary may be very different from what you'll want in Northern Europe.
Even your shore excursions matter. A day exploring a European city requires different shoes and clothing than kayaking near a glacier or spending the afternoon on a Caribbean beach.
The goal isn't to prepare for every possible situation.
It's to pack thoughtfully for the experiences you're actually going to have.

Packing Smarter for Your Celebrity Cruise: What to Bring Based on Where You're Going
Now we're putting the finishing touches on your vacation by helping you pack for your destination, activities, and time onboard.

Start With Your Itinerary, Not Your Suitcase
Before you pull anything out of your closet, look at your itinerary.
Where are you going?
What time of year are you traveling?
What excursions have you planned?
How much walking will you be doing?
Will you spend your days sightseeing, hiking, lounging on a beach—or perhaps a little of everything?
Celebrity's own current packing guidance emphasizes that destination matters. An active Alaska cruise requires very different clothing from a warm Caribbean sailing or a summer Mediterranean itinerary.
That's why your itinerary should create your packing list—not the other way around.
Packing for an Alaska Celebrity Cruise
If Alaska is on your Live It List, there's one word I want you to remember:
Layers.
Alaska weather can change significantly throughout the day. Celebrity recommends a combination of short- and long-sleeved shirts, sweaters or fleece, a lightweight jacket, waterproof outerwear, comfortable pants, wool or moisture-wicking socks, and waterproof footwear.
Don't Forget the Extras
This is also one destination where a few seemingly small items can make a big difference.
Consider packing:
- Binoculars for wildlife viewing
- A small water-resistant day bag
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Gloves and a hat
- A portable charger
- A reusable water bottle
And yes—pack a swimsuit.
It may sound strange when you're preparing to see glaciers, but Celebrity ships offer pools, hot tubs, and onboard spaces where you'll be very happy you brought one.
Packing for a Caribbean Celebrity Cruise
Now let's completely change the suitcase.
For the Caribbean, think lightweight, breathable, sun-conscious, and comfortable.
Celebrity currently recommends beachwear, sun protection, coverups, sunglasses, water shoes where appropriate, and clothing suitable for warm and humid conditions.
Think Beyond the Beach
Your excursions should influence what goes into your suitcase.
If you're snorkeling, sailing, hiking, exploring waterfalls, or walking through tropical areas, you may want:
- Comfortable walking or athletic shoes
- Water shoes
- A lightweight rain jacket or poncho
- A sun hat
- A small day bag
- Insect repellent
- A waterproof phone pouch
That beautiful pair of sandals might be perfect around the ship.
They may not be what you want when you're walking over uneven terrain on an excursion.
Packing for Europe and the Mediterranean
"Europe" isn't one packing category.
A summer Mediterranean sailing may mean warm weather, lightweight clothing, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes.
A cruise through Ireland, Iceland, the British Isles, or Scandinavia can mean cooler temperatures, wind, and rain—even during summer. Celebrity recommends preparing for changing conditions and bringing waterproof outerwear for many northern European itineraries.
Comfortable Shoes Matter
If there's one thing I don't want you discovering halfway through a day in Rome, Florence, Barcelona, or another walking-intensive port, it's that the shoes you packed look wonderful but aren't comfortable.
You'll often encounter cobblestones, steps, hills, and long sightseeing days.
This is not the vacation to break in a brand-new pair of shoes.
And if your itinerary includes churches or other religious sites, check the requirements for the places you plan to visit. Some destinations require more modest clothing or covered shoulders and knees.
What Should You Wear Onboard?
Celebrity's onboard style is generally relaxed, but evenings can become a little dressier.
Smart Casual attire is used in main dining, specialty restaurants, and the Celebrity Theatre. Celebrity also features Evening Chic nights, when guests who wish to can dress things up a little more.
You don't need to pack an entirely different wardrobe.
Think about pieces you can mix, match, and wear more than once.
A few versatile outfits can take you much further than a suitcase filled with "just in case" clothing.

Don't Forget Your Embarkation-Day Bag
Your checked luggage may not arrive at your stateroom immediately, so keep important items with you.
What Goes in Your Carry-On?
I recommend keeping essentials such as:
- Travel documents
- Identification
- Prescription medications
- Phone and charger
- Valuables
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- A swimsuit if you want to enjoy the pool
- Anything you'll need during your first few hours onboard
Celebrity also recommends keeping embarkation-day essentials in your carry-on rather than waiting for your checked luggage.
Travel Smarter Tip
Pack for what you're going to do—not for everything you might possibly do.
Lay out your itinerary before you pack.
Then look at each day and ask:
What am I actually doing that day?
Glacier viewing?
Beach day?
Walking tour?
Special dinner?
Once you start packing around experiences instead of possibilities, that suitcase becomes much easier to manage.
Tina's Take
I think one of the biggest packing mistakes we make is packing for the vacation we imagine instead of the vacation we've actually planned.
We bring the extra shoes.
The extra dresses.
The "maybe I'll need this" outfit.
And somehow we're sitting on the suitcase trying to get it closed.
As your Trusted Travel Advisor, I'd rather help you think through the experience.
If I know you're hiking in Alaska, I want you prepared for changing weather. If you're walking through European cities, I want you wearing shoes that won't have you thinking about your feet instead of the beautiful place you've waited years to see.
Packing isn't about bringing more.
It's about bringing what helps you enjoy the experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Most Important Thing to Pack for Alaska?
Layers and waterproof outerwear should be high on your list. Alaska's weather can change throughout the day, so clothing that can be added or removed easily gives you flexibility.
Do I Need Formal Clothes on a Celebrity Cruise?
Celebrity uses Evening Chic rather than a traditional formal night concept. Guests can dress up if they'd like, while Smart Casual remains an option for dining and the theater. “What is great about this option, for a seven-night cruise bring one or two neutral bottoms and three tops. You can then mix and match them to have seven different outfits. Especially since these are items that you are only going to be wearing for a couple of hours at the most each day of your cruise.” ~ Tina Moczynski, Cruise Expert ~Shores And More Travel.
Should I Pack Differently Based on My Shore Excursions?
Absolutely. Hiking, kayaking, beach days, city walking tours, and cultural visits can all have different clothing and footwear requirements. Review your excursion descriptions before packing.
Should I Put Medication in My Checked Luggage?
Keep essential medications with you in your carry-on rather than placing them in luggage that will be taken separately to your stateroom.
You've Completed the Celebrity Cruises Learning Path
You've made it through all three guides!
✓ Guide 1: You learned how to look beyond the advertised cruise fare and understand overall vacation value.
✓ Guide 2: You learned why the "best" cabin isn't necessarily the most expensive one—it's the one that fits how you travel.
✓ Guide 3: You've learned how to pack according to your destination and the experiences you've planned.
And there's one idea connecting all three:
There isn't one right Celebrity cruise experience for everyone.
There is a right experience for you.
That's why thoughtful travel planning begins with understanding the traveler.
Don't Put It on a Bucket List. Put It on Your Live It List.
When you finally stand in front of that glacier, wander through that European village, or look out over the Caribbean and think, I can't believe I'm actually here, you probably won't remember everything you packed.
You'll remember how the experience made you feel.
That's what travel is really about.
Not collecting destinations.
Not checking boxes.
But experiencing the places you've dreamed about while you have the opportunity to experience them.
Don't put it on a Bucket List. Put it on your Live It List.
