Travel Documentation Check-Up: What You Need to Know Before You Go
Whether it's your first trip in years or you're a seasoned globetrotter, the single most overlooked part of planning a vacation isn’t picking the destination — it’s making sure your travel documentation is in order.
As a professional travel advisor, I’ve seen countless trips get delayed, rescheduled, or complicated simply because someone didn’t realize their passport was expired… or that a new TSA rule was in effect. In 2026, documentation is no longer a “last-minute” checklist item — it’s mission critical.
So, let’s do a Travel Documentation Check-Up together. Consider this your friendly reminder (from someone who does this every day!) to pause, take a breath, and make sure your documents are ready to get you where you’re going — smoothly and stress-free.

New in 2026: REAL ID Enforcement Is Here — and It Could Cost You
REAL ID isn’t a new concept, but as of May 7, 2025, the enforcement is real — and it’s impacting travelers across the U.S. If you’re planning to board a domestic flight and you don’t have a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, TSA will still let you through… but you’ll be hit with a $45 ConfirmID fee.
That’s right — according to recent reports from NBC, KQED, and ABC News, travelers are being charged at the airport for not having the right documentation. This “grace” process, called ConfirmID, may feel like a backup plan, but it comes with added time, stress, and money. Not ideal when you're rushing to make a flight!
My advice: If your license is up for renewal soon, take the extra step to get a REAL ID. You’ll need to bring documents proving your identity, Social Security number, and address (like a printed bank statement or utility bill). It’s a one-time hassle that can save you a major headache later.
Don’t Have a REAL ID Yet? Your Passport Still Works
Here’s the good news — a valid U.S. passport (book or card) is fully REAL ID-compliant. That means if you’re flying domestically and don’t yet have a REAL ID driver’s license, your passport will do the trick at TSA.
That said, this only applies if your passport is valid and in good condition. Which brings me to the next step of your Travel Documentation Check-Up...

Passport Check-Up: Is Your Passport Travel-Ready?
Your passport is your key to the world — but it can’t do its job if it’s expired, damaged, or close to the cutoff date. Many countries now require that your passport be valid for at least six months past your date of entry.
Here’s a quick checklist I recommend to all my clients:
- No torn, bent, or missing pages
- No water damage or stains
- Still valid for at least six more months
- Name matches your travel documents and bookings
- It’s easy to locate (don’t laugh — it happens more often than you think!)
If your passport fails any of these, it’s time to renew. Passport processing times fluctuate depending on demand, so don’t wait until the last minute.
Pro tip: Planning to travel in the next 6–12 months? Set a calendar reminder to check your passport now, not the week before your trip.
Should You Consider Global Entry?
For frequent flyers and international adventurers, Global Entry is a game-changer. This Trusted Traveler Program allows you to breeze through U.S. Customs when returning from abroad, and includes TSA PreCheck for faster security screening when you depart.
Here’s why I love it — and why I recommend it to my clients:
- Skip long customs lines with expedited re-entry
- Enjoy TSA PreCheck perks (shoes on, laptops in bag)
- Save time on every trip, domestic or international
- Valid for five years and includes all the major airports
The process includes an online application, background check, and in-person interview, but the payoff is worth it — especially if you have tight connections or travel multiple times per year.

Ready to Travel Smart?
The truth is, travel is more exciting when you feel prepared. Whether you're flying across the country or halfway around the globe, having your documentation in order gives you peace of mind — and lets you focus on what matters: the journey ahead.
And if this feels overwhelming, you don’t have to figure it out alone. When we work together to plan your vacation, I walk you through every step — from passports to packing lists to personalized itineraries. Travel should be fun, not frustrating.
